This week is Fire Prevention Week, and the Fire Department of Jenkintown is hosting an eventthis Thursday, Oct. 10th, from 6:30 – 8:30 pm. This event will be held on Greenwood Avenue between Cedar and Leedom Streets. This portion of Greenwood Avenue will be closed to allow for this event. This is a great opportunity for children to learn about fire prevention and a chance to meet and say thanks to our volunteers who work so hard for our community all year long. In preparation for the 2020 Budget, the Borough will be holding their annual budget workshops beginning on Wednesday October 16th, 2019 at 6:00 PM. All budget workshops are open to the public. The first budget workshop will concentrate on a preliminary review of the (01) General Fund. Workshop #2 will focus on Street Lighting (02), Fire Protection (03) and Fire Apparatus (04) and any others as time permits, details below. The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is excited to announce the 2020 Radon Poster Contest for students.
The U.S. Surgeon General lists radon exposure as the second leading cause of lung cancer. Radon is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas that enters homes through cracks in the foundation, becoming part of the air indoors. It’s estimated that 40 percent of homes in Pennsylvania have elevated levels of radon, and conducting a simple radon test is the only way to detect the amount of radon present.
Students ages 9-14 years old as of November 30 are encouraged to combine science and art by creating an educational poster that shows the physical aspects of radon, the harmful effects of indoor radon gas, or the importance of testing for radon in the home. Read More »
AQUA’s sub contractor, Caddick Utilities, will continue the second phase of the excavation and watermain installation project on Monday, September 30 and Tuesday, October 1, 2019. Vernon Road will be closed to “thru traffic” from Homestead Road to Rydal Road from 7:00 AM – 3:00 PM to allow for the roadway to be excavated and the new watermain to be safely installed. Flaggers and signage will be on site to help control the flow of traffic during this process and residents will continue to have access to their properties.
