Another Jenkintown Borough Tradition Celebrated

No matter where you look, Jenkintown Borough has another tradition that everyone is welcome to be a part of. Most residents are aware of the Red and Blue rivalries that shake up the quiet streets of Jenkintown every year, the Tuesday night Summer Music Series in Town Center, the September Arts Festival and the Annual 5K Sunset Run that always seems to welcome the beginning of summer, but some residents still might not be aware of the block parties that occur during the summer months throughout the Borough. With children off from school and the long hours of day light, residents enjoy holding weekend block parties. These friendly get togethers are a wonderful opportunity for you and your family to enjoy yourselves while meeting other residents who are all proud to call Jenkintown Borough their home. The residents themselves perform all the substantial planning and preparation work that is necessary. There is a cost-free permit that must be filed with the Borough. These planned parties are reviewed/signed off on and assisted by the Fire Marshal, JPD, Public Works and Borough Administration. The Borough Public Works Department drops off road blocks and residents are free to use the entire street as they please – some neighbors rent bouncy houses, or sprinkler systems, DJ’s or food trucks to entertain everyone throughout the day while the kids play in the street without the worry of any passing cars. There are many annual block parties throughout the Borough that take place on Cedar Street, Mather Road, Greenwood Avenue, Rodman Avenue and Runnymede Avenue to name a few. One of the reoccurring block parties took place the first weekend of June on the 100 block of Cedar Street (picture below) and as you can see by the smiles it was a resounding success. Unfortunately, mother nature wasn’t on their side this year, however the kids still enjoyed riding their bikes and scooters in the rain. Everyone enjoyed themselves and thankfully, with the benefit of another architectural characteristic of Jenkintown, a large beautiful classical porch, everyone could stay and watch the rain and enjoy one of the many summer weekends in Jenkintown.
