Dear Neighbor,

For many, this is traditionally a time of communion with family and friends, and not a day on which I would typically intrude with an email. But as you well know, these are not traditional, typical times.

Passover and Easter both celebrate renewal, rebirth, perseverance and hope for the future. Let us continue to act communally and to hope for our future together.

We are now five weeks into our communal response to a global pandemic. The number of positive cases in the commonwealth continues to climb, and we continue to self-isolate. But there is reason to believe that here in Montgomery County, we may be reaching the top of our curve. The next few weeks will tell that tale. In the meantime, however, I hope that this email finds you in the virtual company of people you love — and that you find this email and the information within it helpful during these trying times.

Schools closed for remainder of academic year

In what was undoubtedly an understandably crushing  opens in a new windowannouncement for many teachers and students throughout our Commonwealth, Governor Tom Wolf – in consultation with Secretary of Health Dr. Rachel Levine and Secretary of Education Pedro A. Rivera, declared yesterday PA schools will remain closed for the rest of the academic school year.

It is OK to be disappointed about the loss for our children and teachers, all of whom work incredibly hard at learning and educating. That teaching and learning, though, will continue. Schools are strongly encouraged to provide continuity of education for all students in the most appropriate and accessible ways possible.

The Department of Education has been providing ongoing guidance to school communities in the form of FAQs. The guidance information is available at  opens in a new windoweducation.pa.gov/COVID19.

One ugly consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic has been a rise in hate/bias crimes and incidents targeting members of the Asian American Community. These crimes are based upon misinformation regarding COVID-19; however, the impact on the victims of these crimes are real and immeasurable.

Our police forces are taking every allegation seriously, specifically those right now against Asian Americans. Every allegation of hate/bias crimes and incidents against all groups  opens in a new windowwill be investigated thoroughly.

We will not tolerate this intolerance.
