Due to extreme temperatures and sustained winds todays event Recognizing Salem Baptist Church for its notable history and significant contribution to the community will be required to be moved inside. The Independent Fire Company has offered their Fire House for this event to take place warmly and safely.

As a reminder, this year, on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Monday, January 21st, the Borough in conjunction with Community Leaders and Salem Baptist Church, will be hosting an event at 12:00 noon. This event has been organized to recognize the significant contribution to the community as well as observe the notable history of Salem Baptist Church of Jenkintown.

Founded in 1884, Salem Baptist Church was the first African-American Church in Montgomery County and has been “a way station for believers of all walks of life” for over 120 years.

Distinguished Community Leaders presently confirmed to attend will be Reverend Marshall Mitchell of Salem Baptist Church (who will be speaking and accepting the recognition), Pa State Representative Steve McCarter, Borough Council President Deborra Sines Pancoe and Patrick Edouard District Representative from Senator Art Haywood’s office.
