Due to the nature of winter storm Stella, the Borough has extended the requirements for removing ice and snow from sidewalks, to this Saturday evening, 18 March.
Under normal conditions sidewalks are required to be cleared within 24 hours of the end of the storm. The heavy, icy precipitation we received was certainly a challenge. And it is frustrating when our efforts to plow streets require re-clearing of some sidewalk sections. We get it and we empathize.
Regardless, icy sidewalks, particularly at intersections, are a public safety hazard. No one, particularly our children walking to school, should have to slip down the other side of an ice pile into traffic.
Many properties have been notified of noncompliance already. Starting Sunday, homeowners as well as businesses will be issued citations if walkways are not cleared by the extended date.
If you’re unable to perform the work, kindly ask neighbors to help, or to put you in touch with any of the borough teenagers who have been out with shovels.
If the Phillies can sit on top the NL East, we can beat winter storm Stella. Thank you for your help keeping the borough safe.
