Who is eligible to obtain a parking permit?
Residents that live on a street designated for permit parking in the Borough’s Vehicles and Traffic Code, Chapter 172, are eligible to obtain parking permits.
Does a permit guarantee me a parking space?
A resident parking permit does NOT guarantee a parking space; however, it will provide residents with a greater opportunity to park near their homes without suffering the unnecessary burden of competing for these parking spaces with non-residential and commercial vehicles parking in the neighborhood.
How do I display my permit?
Resident parking permits must be visible on the driver’s side front windshield of the vehicle in the upper left-hand corner.
How do I modify the vehicle information assigned to my permit?
To modify vehicle information, a new registration must be provided to the Jenkintown Police Department, and a new sticker will be provided to replace the old one.
How do I renew my parking permit?
Parking permits expire on an annual basis. Each year residents may renew their permit with the Jenkintown Police Department. An email notification will be sent to current permit holders by the end of each calendar year alerting them the new permits are available.
Is there a map that shows the various permit parking zones in the Borough?
Yes, a permit parking map showing the various zones is available at the Jenkintown Police Department.
How do I apply for permit parking on my street?
Residents may request permit parking on their street by submitting a request to the Borough for consideration. Many factors are considered to determine if a street is eligible for permit parking.
How do I get permit parking on my street?
To have a street studied for permit parking, at least 70% of households on the block are required to sign a petition. Once that is done, the petition should be submitted to the Public Safety Committee so the Jenkintown Police Department can perform an evaluation to be provided to Borough Council for consideration of approval. The following criteria will be assessed:
- Are 85% or more of the parking spaces on the block occupied at the time the reserved parking is requested?
- Are 20% or more of the parking spaces utilized by non-residents?
- Would a simple parking time restriction solve the problem based on the information and frequency of 1 and 2?
- Percentage of properties that are residential vs. non-residential on the street. If in the business district, Borough needs to look at impact on businesses during the day time hours.
- Percentage of spaces on the block that should be designated for residents i.e. is parking allowed only on one side of the street for residents.
- Percentage of households on the block that do or do not have off street parking. Residential permit parking may not be warranted if a large number of households on the block have off street parking but utilize the space for other purposes.
