With the Fourth of July excitement finally wearing off, Jenkintown Borough would like to take a moment to focus some attention on the memorial that is located directly outside of Borough Hall and the Police Department. This monument was erected in November of 1919 to celebrate the return of men and women from WWI. The monument previously stood in front of the old Borough Hall location at the corner of West Avenue and Leedom Street. The original monument was a concrete pedestal with mounted mortar shells, and a bronze tablet of all the names of those who served. When Borough Hall was relocated to its current location at 700 Summit Avenue, the pedestal of the original monument was incapable of being moved and unfortunately was unable to be preserved. The bronze tablet was, however, placed on a large piece of granite instead, which is how the monument sits today. Jenkintown Borough along with the Old York Road Historical Society applied for a grant through the 100 Cities/ 100 Memorials effort that honors the 100th Anniversary of WWI. This grant allowed the Borough to have the bronze plaque refinished as well as have the memorial cleaned, including the granite base. The work was completed by Materials Conservation Company who are expert conservationist based out of Philadelphia. The memorial was completed in perfect time for Memorial Day celebrations, where wreaths were laid at the site. The Borough hopes that this monument stands the test of time to last for another 100 years.

Emergency Closure of Mather Road
Mather Road from Wyncote Road to Mather Spur will be closed until further notice, however, most residents of Mather Road will be able to access their driveways. A sinkhole has developed due to compromised utility pipes and for the safety of the residents and the public there can be no vehicular traffic in this area. Our repair teams have begun work this afternoon. Local residents of the 200 block of Mather Road will not have water while repairs are being made this afternoon. AQUA will notify all residents affected. Should affected residents have any further questions, you may contact Michael Lahiff from AQUA at (215) 659-2505 ext: 56004.
Please make plans to take an alternate route during the time listed to avoid further disruption to your travels. Thank you for your patience and understanding while these necessary repairs are made.
Should residents have any questions regarding the closure, please contact Borough Hall at (215) 885-0700. If there is an emergency, please call 911.
Another Jenkintown Borough Tradition Celebrated
No matter where you look, Jenkintown Borough has another tradition that everyone is welcome to be a part of. Most residents are aware of the Red and Blue rivalries that shake up the quiet streets of Jenkintown every year, the Tuesday night Summer Music Series in Town Center, the September Arts Festival and the Annual 5K Sunset Run that always seems to welcome the beginning of summer, but some residents still might not be aware of the block parties that occur during the summer months throughout the Borough. With children off from school and the long hours of day light, residents enjoy holding weekend block parties. These friendly get togethers are a wonderful opportunity for you and your family to enjoy yourselves while meeting other residents who are all proud to call Jenkintown Borough their home. The residents themselves perform all the substantial planning and preparation work that is necessary. There is a cost-free permit that must be filed with the Borough. These planned parties are reviewed/signed off on and assisted by the Fire Marshal, JPD, Public Works and Borough Administration. The Borough Public Works Department drops off road blocks and residents are free to use the entire street as they please – some neighbors rent bouncy houses, or sprinkler systems, DJ’s or food trucks to entertain everyone throughout the day while the kids play in the street without the worry of any passing cars. There are many annual block parties throughout the Borough that take place on Cedar Street, Mather Road, Greenwood Avenue, Rodman Avenue and Runnymede Avenue to name a few. One of the reoccurring block parties took place the first weekend of June on the 100 block of Cedar Street (picture below) and as you can see by the smiles it was a resounding success. Unfortunately, mother nature wasn’t on their side this year, however the kids still enjoyed riding their bikes and scooters in the rain. Everyone enjoyed themselves and thankfully, with the benefit of another architectural characteristic of Jenkintown, a large beautiful classical porch, everyone could stay and watch the rain and enjoy one of the many summer weekends in Jenkintown.
