Infrastructure and Improvement Projects Currently Taking Place within Jenkintown Borough
You have more than likely noticed construction taking place or improvements being made throughout the Borough. This update provides a snapshot of the scope of that work including some funding details and approximate project timelines.

  • “Traffic Control Lights” PennDOT TAP 2017 Green Light Go Grant – 100% Complete, (Grant awarded $89,784) this grant opportunity scope of work included: updating all of the Borough traffic lights to LED, furnished/installed battery back-up systems at six (6) signalized intersections on York Road, furnished/installed two (2) auxiliary cabinets on York Road, furnished/installed emergency generator backup plugs at six (6) signalized intersections and provided four (4) portable emergency generators. This is an excellent opportunity that will improve life safety during emergency situations to the general public as well as emergency responders. The automatic systems will reduce overtime to both the Police and Public Works during emergency situations. The grant contract is being finalized with PennDOT.
  • “Southern Gateway” 2017 MONTCO 2040 Implementation Grant – 70% Complete, (Grant awarded $73,902) This project implements Strategy NP10c of the Jenkintown 2035 Comprehensive Plan. Borough Council, JB Planning Commission and the Montgomery County planners worked with Pennoni Associates Inc. to complete a long-term planning project to construct a Southern Gateway to the Borough along York Road RT 611 to distinguish Jenkintown Borough as a special place as drivers enter or pass through.
  • “Sanitary Sewer Main Rehabilitation” 2018 PA Small Water Grant – Contract to be awarded August 28th, (Grant awarded $390,784), work to begin in September with expected project completion in 2019 – The Borough continues to upgrade and repair the main sanitary sewer system within the Borough. This project scope of work is focusing on the West Avenue sanitary sewer drainage basin. The project will reduce Inflow & Infiltration and make repairs where necessary, which will; reduce sewage pollutants released into the ground, remove extraneous flows reducing treatment cost and allowing for future capacity flow releases (EDU’s) by the PaDep allowing the Borough to continue to grow the commercial business base.
  • “2019 Paving Project” – Contract awarded, work scheduled to be completed prior to the start of school. Roads to be paved and striped on this years paving project will be Walnut Street (West to Greenwood Avenue), Highland Avenue (Hillside to West Avenue) and Cedar Street (Willow to Summit Avenue). Property owners on these roads have or are working to bring their sidewalks and curb into code compliance contributing to the walkability of the Borough. The funding for this repaving project is being provided through the PA State liquid fuel fund and in agreement with Aqua Pennsylvania who are required by Borough ordinance to pay for 50% of the milling/paving costs on roads that they disturb, that have not been paved within the past five (5) years.
  • “Flood Mitigation” 2018 Department of Community Economic Development Grant (Grant awarded $100,000) – Jenkintown Borough was awarded a portion of the total amount requested, which will assist in funding the work required to mitigate the Cedar Street flooding. The scope of the work on this project includes the existing downstream conveyance system from Walnut Street/Mather Road/Township Line Road, as well as the proposed upstream inlets and piping on York Road, Washington Lane and Cedar Street. Alternative design and inlet configurations are being studied and considered. All efforts are being made to relieve the street flooding that is occurring on Cedar Street during heavy rain events.
  • “Borough Beautification Program” – Ongoing, Public Works has undertaken a beautification project in 2019 that has been successful and will continue to be implemented Borough wide. Some of the projects this year have included; removing tripping hazards around the street trees on York Road and installing porous paving surrounds, refurbishing/painting mast arms on street lights, restoring park benches, installing drainage systems in areas experiencing issues, sidewalk/street cleaning throughout the business district, weekly curbside yard waste pick up and providing a street sweeping and leaf collection schedule for property owners.
  • “Aqua Pennsylvania Watermain Replacement Project” – Phase one (1) 85% complete. Aqua’s sub-contractor Caddick Utilities has replaced the aging water supply infrastructure on Walnut Street (West to Greenwood Avenue) and Highland Avenue (Hillside to West Avenue) the watermain and individual services are all being replaced on this project. A phase two (2) has been submitted and approved, which will begin in September and will include full replacement of the watermains and individual property water services on Newbold Road (entire) Vernon Road (entire) Homestead Road (entire).
