Every year, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday is honored as a Day of Service for people to improve their communities and assist people in need. Many schools, churches and community groups organize service projects for school students who have the day off. Below you can find a listing of Day of Service work in the area should you like to participate:
This year, the children of Jenkintown Community are hosting MLK Day of Service. They have partnered up with Loaves and Fishes to invite the families that participate in the food bank weekly to also take part in the event. There will be prizes from local businesses, and a hot meal will be served. Each family that participates will receive a bag of non-perishable items. The children will be preparing the food for families which will be served at Immaculate Conception.
The public is invited to volunteer for Martin Luther King “Day of Service” projects on the campus of Abington Friends School on Monday, January 15, 2018 to help with service projects that help the homeless, the elderly and those suffering from illness. Registration will begin at 9 a.m. with a short program in the Abington Monthly Meeting House. Then volunteers will lend a hand to one of two dozen service projects that benefit local organizations that help the homeless, the elderly and those who are ill. The Day of Service will conclude at noon. Last year, The King Day of Service had 600 volunteers come to campus to help with 24 projects that assist the homeless, the elderly and those who are ill.The King Day of Service is one of the largest in the Philly suburbs. MLK Day of Service at Arcadia University for Repurposing, eWaste, and Shredding Event. Arcadia University students, in conjunction with the University’s Community and Civic Engagement Center, will host the annual MLK Day of Service Repurposing, eWaste, and Shredding event on Monday, January 15, 2018 from 10:00am-3:00pm at Murphy Hall as a way to honor the life and work of Martin Luther King Jr. Members of the community are asked to bring items to be donated to a number local non-profit organizations, as well as eWaste to be ethically recycled, and shredding to be properly disposed of. Volunteers will help to unload and sort through the items to be given to each organization. In particular this year, donations of winter coats (for adults and children), baby formula, diapers, and wipes are needed to support families relocated to the area from Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria.
