COVID-19 Update: Slow and Steady Wins the Race

Jenkintown Borough continues to update the Borough website with the latest COVID-19 information and community resources that have been provided by County, State, and Federal agencies. State Representative Steve McCarter has provided very helpful information and re-opening plans below, stating that Montgomery County will not be re-opening on May 8th as other regions in the Commonwealth might.

Dear Neighbor,

It’s been seven weeks since the first cases of COVID-19 were confirmed in Pennsylvania, and six weeks — or is it a lifetime? — since we in Montgomery County have been sheltering in place. During that time, we have all worked mightily to flatten the curve in Pennsylvania, and we have succeeded in stopping the virus’ most insistent spread.

However, here in Montgomery County — the tip of the COVID-19 spear in Pennsylvania — we are still seeing high levels of infection and death, especially in our long-term care and nursing facilities. Today, Pennsylvania Secretary of Health Rachel Levine, M.D., reported a total of 1,599 new cases of COVID-19 in Pennsylvania; more than half of them were from Philadelphia and its ring counties, Montgomery, Bucks and Delaware.

Montgomery County will not be opening May 8, as other regions of the commonwealth might (see A Plan for Reopening Pennsylvania, below). We still need extensive testing, accurate contact tracing for all new cases and adequate medical supplies and beds available to handle a possible resurgence in the virus. That time is coming, and the governor, in consultation with the Department of Health, is planning for it. We are just not there yet. Read More »

Shine Your Light For Firefighters

The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation is requesting support from communities by requesting participation in thanking firefighters for their service on May 4, 2020, in recognition of International Firefighters’ Day by placing a red light bulb on their porches. Jenkintown Borough would like to share the information below provided by the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation with an explanation of the event.

Nearly everyone knows a firefighter.  They’re our family, friends, and co-workers.  They respond to a stranger’s call for help without hesitation and serve with pride and compassion.  On May 4, 2020, the world celebrates International Firefighters Day.  This is a way to say thank you to our firefighters for all that they do to keep our communities safe.

For the first time, the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) invites communities to celebrate firefighters by lighting their homes in “red” on May 4, 2020.  We ask that you change your porch light(s) and share your #ShineYourLight4Firefighters story with us on social media as a thank you to all of the firefighters who are on the front lines every day, keeping us safe. Lighting up in “red” on May 4th would be an additional symbol of support to all of those who are there 24-hours a day, 7-days a week to protect us.  Please let us know if you will be participating by filling out our form at https://www.firehero.org/international-firefighters-day/shine-your-light-for-firefighters/.

Also, on May 5, 2020, the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation will be participating in Giving Tuesday Now.  Please help the NFFF support firefighters and their families on May 5th for #Give2NFFFNow, a global day of giving.

If you need “red” light bulbs, please buy online using our Amazon Associates link at https://amzn.to/2XWm5oE.  If you have any questions or would like more information about the NFFF, please contact Donna Clark at dclark@firehero.org and thank you for your consideration.

Thank you for your continued support.  Stay well.
