Trash Collection

Curbside Trash

Republic Services has requested that all trash continue to be placed at the curb in tightly sealed plastic bags or tightly sealed metal or plastic containers with lids to ensure the safety of their workers.

Curbside trash collection is provided each Friday with the exception of major holidays.  During the week of some major holidays, trash may be delayed ONE day until Saturday.  Notice will be given. Trash shall be collected between the hours of 7:00am and 7:00pm.

All trash must be placed near the curb no later than 7:00am of the scheduled collection day. Empty trash containers must be returned to the respective property no later than 7:30pm of the same collection day.

Trash must be placed in tightly sealed metal and/or plastic containers (with lids) no larger than the 30-gallon size, or in tightly sealed plastic bags suitable for trash.

Recyclable materials, which can be co-mingled, can be placed in any receptacle clearly marked as recycle (recycling stickers are available in Borough Hall and may be placed on any large receptacle).  Lidded recycling containers are encouraged to help protect the integrity of recyclables.  Please do not place recyclables in plastic trash bags.

No trash container, trash bag and/or recycle bag shall exceed sixty (60) pounds in total weight. The total amount of waste collected from any single unit on any one collection day shall not exceed six (6) containers/bags.

Trash must be placed out for collection on a regular basis and not allowed to accumulate. The Borough will not collect any materials resulting from building repair, alterations, excavation, demolition and/or construction.

All curbside collection users along York Road are requested to place all trash scheduled for collection in front of your store and not at the curb. Trash placed at the curb along York Road may accidentally blow onto the highway causing litter through out the Business District.  Care must be taken to avoid this from occurring.

Business trash is not to be placed in the public trash containers at any time. These containers are there to prevent litter by the pedestrians, not for businesses to dispose of their trash.

Jenkintown Borough Public Works will continue yard waste collection every Tuesday and collection from Public trash receptacles (York Road, West Ave. and Town Square) on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays.

If you have any concerns please call the Borough Hall office at 215-885-0700, if your concern pertains to trash please call as early in the day as possible while the Waste collectors are still present in town.

Yard Debris

Yard waste may be placed in biodegradable bags OR cans and placed near the curb on Tuesdays by 7:00 AM.  The trash collection contractor does not collect yard waste.

Yard Waste consists of grass clippings, flowers, leaves, branches, etc.  If branches are to be recycled, they must be cut no longer than 4 feet in length and must be bundled and tied.  Do not mix trash or other recycling with yard debris.

Borough Residents can obtain Brown Bio-Degradable Bags at Borough Hall between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Bags are currently five (5) for $2.00 and each resident may purchase up to twenty-five (25) bags per visit.

Recycling

Recycling is done through single-stream.  This means that all recyclable items may be placed in the same container.  It is important that when recycling, you ensure your recyclables are empty, clean and dry. All recyclable material is to be placed in a
designated lidded receptacle. Recycling stickers are available to residents at Borough Hall and you may place them on a lidded waste receptacle of your choice.

Collection of the commingled recycling is every Friday and must be placed curbside by 7:00 AM.

Storm Water Management

Every time it rains there is a risk of pollution to our creeks, streams and rivers. Rainfall runoff in Jenkintown drains to the Tookany Creek and the Pennypack Creek. You can help keep Jenkintown clean and healthy by participating in Storm Water Management.

What is Storm Water?

Storm water is water from precipitation, which flows across the pavement and ground when it rains or when snow and ice melt.  The water seeps into the ground or drains into what we call storm water inlets.  These are the drains you see at street corners or at low points on the sides of the streets.  The drain water is called storm water runoff.

You should never pour any hazardous materials like cleaning supplies, paint, oil or other chemicals like automotive products (motor oil, gasoline, antifreeze or transmission fluid, etc.), household products (drain and oven cleaners, etc.) or swimming pool chemicals down a storm sewer.  These items should be properly disposed.  You can safely dispose these dangerous items through Montgomery County Household Hazardous Waste Program.  You can reach them at 610-278-3618opens phone dialer or opens in a new windowvisit their webpage.

Leaves and other yard debris can also clog our inlets and contribute to street flooding and pollution of the storm water.  You can help us keep inlets clear by:

  • Collecting your yard debris and place into biodegradable bags, which are picked up every Tuesday.
  • Reporting anyone who is dumping harmful waste into our sewer inlets or other items that may clog the inlets, which may include plastic bags. leaves or street litter to the Borough Office at 215-885-0700opens phone dialer.
