Public Meeting for Greenwood Avenue Bridge Closure

PennDOT is holding a public meeting for the Greenwood Avenue Bridge Replacement Project on Thursday, May 31 at 7:00 p.m. at Curtis Hall in Cheltenham. (Curtis Hall is located at the intersection of Church Road and Greenwood Ave.) PennDOT will briefly explain the project, point out the detours for cars and trucks and answer questions. No closure date has been set as yet for the bridge, but PennDOT expects to have this information for the meeting.

New Assistant Borough Manager Appointed

Christopher Bashore began as the Assistant Borough Manager on Monday, May 14. Chris resides in Limerick Township and most recently served as the Assistant to the Manager in Edgmont Township (Delaware County). He holds a bachelor's degree in political science from West Chester and a Master's in Public Administration from Villanova. Please take a minute to stop in the Borough Hall and meet Chris.

Human Trafficking Film, Discussion Set for Jenkintown’s Hiway Theater

There are more slaves today than at any time in human history. That tragic statistic is connected to faces and families in the documentary film "Not My Life," about human trafficking in the United States and worldwide. The film, narrated by Glenn Close, is part of a free event Tuesday, May 15, 7:00 p.m. at Jenkintown's Hiway Theate, 212 York Road, Jenkintown. The film will be followed by a discussion led by a panel of experts on the many forms human trafficking can take – perhaps in our own communities – and how individuals can help.

The Jenkintown event is organized by the office of State Representative Lawrence Curry (154th District), in collaboration with the Montgomery County Anti-Human Trafficking Coalition and a group of concerned citizens. For more information, contact Rep. Curry's office at (215) 572-5210.

Volunteers Needed to Serve on Civil Service Commission

The Jenkintown Borough Council is seeking interested residents to serve on the Civil Service Commission. The Civil Service Commission establishes the testing and interview process of all applicants for positions in the police force.

There are currently two vacancies on the 3-person board. Members serve for staggered terms of six years.

Montco to Host Compost Bin and Rain Barrel Truckload Sale!

When – Saturday, May 19, 2012 from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Where – Greater Plymouth Community Center (2910 Jolly Road, Plymouth Meeting 19462)

What – Compost bins, valued at $100, will be available for sale at $45.00 (including tax). Rain barrels, valued at $120 will be available for sale at $55.00 (including tax). Cash, checks and credit cards (Visa or Master Card) will be accepted for payment.

Details – The sale will be taking place rain or shine and all items will be available on a first come, first serve basis, while supplies last. Both the compost bins and rain barrels should be able to fit in most cars. Please plan accordingly if you intend to purchase.

JENKINTOWN FARMERS’ MARKET RETURNS MAY 2

The Jenkintown Farmers' Market opens the 2012 season on Wednesday, May 2 in the Town Square. The market will be open from 11:30 am to 4:00 pm. Please note this is a change in hours from 2011.

The 2012 Market welcomes several new vendors this year, including Berkholder Farm (organic produce, jams, honey); Naughty Nutty Love (gourmet nut butters); Vick's Piks (pickles, hand-made soaps); Raviolitas (home-made gourmet raviolli); and Farm Fromage (hand crafted cheese).

As a special Opening Day Event; local plant expert and Wild Foodies Founder Lynn Landes will be discussing edible and non-edible local plants, some of which may be growing in your own backyard.

The Farmers' Market will be held every Wednesday from 11:30 to 4:00 through November 21 in the Town Square.
